GM is looking into the future, to a world where airbags and bumpers won’t be needed – because your Cadillac won’t crash. According to General Motors, it’s not so far off either. Global Active Safety director John Capp says that in-vehicle Doppler radar would spot obstacles or traffic jams ahead, while further into the future that information could be used in autonomous vehicles, which would share information with each other, as well as traffic signals, and potentially drive themselves.

“GM points out the strong combination of accident avoidance technologies currently offered in the 2010 Cadillac DTS Platinum, including lane departure warning, blind spot alert, and adaptive cruise control, as steps toward that crash-proof car of the future.”

Cadillac is proving that luxury can also be safe. The latest vehicle to win an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award is Cadillac’s SRX, a midsize luxury SUV. It earned the IIHS’s top safety pick after getting a “good” rating for rollover protection. The Cadillac had previously earned good ratings for front, side, and rear crash protection.

To earn a Top Safety Pick award, vehicles must earn the highest ratings in all four IIHS safety evaluations, as well as have electronic stability control, which are standard on the SRX.

IIHS uses research of real-world crashes to conduct its roof strength test. “To test for roof strength, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5-inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio.”

This test gives a good assessment of vehicle structural protection in rollover crashes. Good rated vehicles have roofs that can withstand a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle’s weight. The 2010 SRX withstood a force equal to 4.14 times weight. For comparison, the current federal standard is only 1.5 times weight. The Top Safety Pick award applies to models built after May 2010.

We know one surefire way that you, or anyone, can get into a brand new Cadillac CTS or Escalade for only $199. That is to day “get ON” a new Caddy. But you won’t get any doors, or a motor, or a radio. Yes, along with a trend followed by GMC and BMW – Cadillac is producing bicycles. Want a road bike CTS? A Cadillac BMW? How about the Escalade 21 speed mountain bike? You can have it all, for a very reasonable price.

“Quality, comfort and style are the buzz words most descriptive of these new Cadillac Bicycles. It didn’t happen overnight. It took a group of designers time and careful attention to detail to meet the stiff demand requirements set down for a new, sleek, innovative design that incorporated improved comfort and utility not found in every day bicycles.”

Somehow, I get the feeling Cadillac isn’t in tune with the young hipsters riding bicycles in South Philadelphia today – if they were Cadillac would be producing Fixed Gear bicycles, much like Urban Outfitters. But they do use quality parts in construction of these luxury bikes: Shimano Shifters, custom carbon seats and derailleurs, and Hutchinson Carbon Comp Tires. Be the envy of your bike polo club today with a bike from Cadillac Bike Store!

The Cadillac Model A Runabout, one of the first-ever Caddy’s on the road, will be sold by RM next month. RM Auctions is planning a huge event to sell off dozens of classic vehicles. This Model A will undoubtedly be one of the oldest and most unique.

2500 Model A’s were constructed during their first year. This model was noted for its ability to navigate up hills, which was a huge automotive feat back then. The 1903 Cadillac Model A Runabout was powered by an improved engine designed by Henry Martyn Leland and partner Robert C Faulconer, two years previously.

General Motors has decided to kill off the Cadillac Converj plug-in so they can focus on a more inexpensive electric vehicle. So who killed the electric car this time? Apparently it’s GM’s turn. Is this a sign that going green is already out of style? Probably not, it’s more a sign of the economy and people wanting the most for a small price.

According to Bloomberg News, “The decision, if verified by GM, represents an acknowledgement of the high cost of producing plug-in hybrids that run for long distances without using any gasoline—rather than the type of plug-in hybrids that can use smaller and therefore less expensive battery packs. The Cadillac Converj was intended to follow the design of the Chevy Volt—referred to as an extended-range electric vehicle or plug-in series hybrid—which runs up to 40 miles before the gas engine is used to maintain the vehicle’s range.

“The future lies in plug-in hybrids with smaller electric range,” Eric Noble, president of CarLab, an Orange, California-based automotive consultant, told Bloomberg. Dropping the Converj is “a tacit admission from GM that they over-batteried the Volt.””

Does anybody remember that great cartoon Cadillacs & Dinosaurs? Or the comic book…or video game…No? That’s ok, we do. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was a Saturday morning cartoon series which aired on CBS from 1993 to 1994. Based on a 1986 comic book from Japan (later to be purchased by Marvel), it focused on a group of freedom fighters – including garage mechanic Jack Tenrec (who has a passion for restoring classic Cadillacs) an seductive foreign ambassador Hannah Dundee. Jack also has Hermes, a juvenile “cutter” (Allosaurus) that Jack hand reared.

It’s the 26th century, and the main characters battle not only government officials but other reborn dinosaurs alike. “The dinosaurs have come to reclaim the earth.” Together they confront the serious issues facing this futuristic environment after nature has spun wildly out of control, causing the cities to fall into ruins and dinosaurs to be revived to roam the Earth.

The show dealt with many strong ecological and political issues that were central to the plot development. One major focus was the question of how the dinosaurs managed to re-emerge after they were thought to be extinct. Another focus: How one man was able to restore so many 1952-53 Cadillac Coupe DeVilles. And also, how Hannah’s breasts managed to remain in her shirt for 13 episodes.

Spies over at Jalopnik have discovered a fully unmasked Cadillac CTS-V Sports Wagon for a 2010 – 2011 debut. Just when you thought a Caddy couldn’t have a bigger butt, the CTS-V Wagon looks to be carrying a ton of junk in it’s…hatchback. And I mean really folks, we know Caddy fans love a big ride, but I personally witnessed an all new 2010 CTS barely fit down the street in South Philly last night. Caddy’s may not be the most particle city cars, but they sure look fancy.

Our previous coverage of the once rumored Cadillac CTS-V Wagon stated it will consist of a 550 HP 6.2-liter LSA engine. Now all we need are more spy shots to confirm this! Good work Jalopnik!

Let’s face it – station wagons haven’t been cool since the Griswold’s took a Wagon Queen Family Truckster halfway across America to get the kids to Wally World. But with the 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, your grandpa’s wagon may be hip again. For a company like Caddy, who is on the lookout for a fresh & young audience, choosing station wagon variants of their sexy CTS sedan & Coupe may not seem like a wise decision – but we disagree. SUV’s are out – and people still need legroom, you are getting a little older there, Mr. Dave Mathew’s fan. American’s want space, but now they want a decent MPG rating and to not worry their Firestone tires are gonna pop, causing you to flip over. Station wagons have become the obvious choice.

So what DOES Caddy’s CTS Wagon have for us? Their base 3.0-liter V6 produces a powerful 270 horse power, or 304 HP with a direct injection 3.6-liter V6 option. Miles Per Gallon tests returned 18/27 ratings. Another cool option is GM’s traction control, which can be switched or off, depending on how empty that rainy parking lot is.

2010′s CTS Wagon comes with plenty of room. 58 cubic feet of storage in it’s behind with the seats down. A backup camera and proximity sensors help in those hard to see places when in reverse.

Production on CTS Sport Wagon began on Monday, and soon you too will be able to head down Turn Pike roads after paying the $40,485 sticker, starting price of course.
